The Common Law Admission Test, commonly known as CLAT is a national level entrance exam designed for admissions to law programs at 25 National Law Universities (NLUs) and other participating institutions. The exam aimed to facilitate admission into 5-year integrated LLB courses for UG. The exam is conducted annually by the Consortium of National Law Universities.
Important Note:The official date for CLAT 2026 has been officially announced. The exam is going to be conducted on 7th December 2025 for admissions to the 5-year integrated B.A., LL.B (Hons.) and LL.M.

CLAT 2026 Eligibility Criteria
The CLAT exam is conducted for admission into both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) courses. It is important to note that the the eligibility criteria differs according to the candidates academic background. The following points detail the eligibility criteria for both UG and PG programs through CLAT 2026 exam.
Eligibility for Undergraduate Programs (Five Year Integrated Law Degree)
Educational Qualifications: Candidates who have passed 10+2 or an equivalent examination are eligible to apply.
  • 45% marks for candidates belonging to the General/OBC/Specially-abled Persons (SAP) category.
  • 40% marks for candidates belonging to the SC/ST category.
  • Any candidate appearing in the qualifying examination, i.e., 10+2, can also appear for this examination. However, they should be able to produce sufficient evidence to prove that they have passed 10+2 at the time of admission.
Eligibility for Postgraduate Programs (One Year L.L.M. Degree)
Educational Qualifications: Candidates with an L.L.B. Degree or equivalent examination are eligible to apply.
  • Minimum of 55% marks in General/OBC/Specially-abled Persons (SAP) categories.
  • Minimum of 50% marks in SC/ST category.
  • Candidates appearing in the qualifying examination in April/May 2025 will also be eligible to appear in the CLAT 2026 examination. However, they will be required to produce evidence of having passed the qualifying examination at the time of admission in the allotted National Law Universities.
Additional Information
As per the revised standards, there will be no upper age limit for candidates applying to the Undergraduate Program in CLAT 2026.
How to register for CLAT 2026?
Registrations for CLAT 2026 are open from August 1, 2025 to October 31, 2025. It is important to note that the candidate must fill the application form before the last date. To begin the CLAT application process, the candidate must fill the form online on https://consortiumofnlus.ac.in/clat-2026/
  1. To register for CLAT 2026, the candidate can register on The Consortium of National Law Universities by entering their name, mobile number and email id.
  2. Following so, verify your email and log in using the OTP sent to your registered email.
  3. Now, fill your application form with personal details (name, DOB, gender, category), Communication address and parent/guardian details, academic qualifications, test centre preferences and upload required documents (mentioned below).
  4. Complete the application process by paying the online application fee via debit or credit card or net banking. The application fee is Rs. 4,000 for General and OBC category. Rs. 3,500 for SC/ST/BPL/PwD category candidates.
  5. Finally, submit and download the confirmation page in case of future reference.

NLU Preference List
It is important to note that candidates are now required to submit their preference of NLUs while submitting their CLAT application form. It is a mandatory step from 2026 onwards where applications are now required to select their preference list carefully as the consortium will only consider those NLUs that have been mentioned during registration.

The CLAT designed strategically with each section testing aspirant's expertise and understanding in those domains. For English Language, areas like comprehension and grammar are tested; Current Affairs aim to test national and international factual know-how; Mathematics evaluates aptitude and numerical ability; Legal Reasoning tests analytical and logical skills related to legal situations and Logical Reasoning examines critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities.

English and Reading Comprehension
  1. This section presents students with thought provoking passages. Around 450-500 words each, the passages are carefully selected on themes that include contemporary and historically significant fiction and non-fiction topics.
  2. These Reading Comprehensions (RCs) are expected to be read within 5-7 minutes assuming the candidate's ability to grasp the central theme and key concepts.
  3. Further, candidates should also be proficient in drawing inferences and conclusions after reading the passage.
  4. Questions can be asked based on the summary of the passage.
  5. A deeper analysis of the passage will help the students compare and contrast different points in the passage.
Legal Reasoning
  1. In this section, a passage of about 450 words will be given, which is either factual, based on legal matters or social issues. Candidates will be able to score well in this section if they develop an awareness of legal and moral issues.
  2. They should be able to think logically and assess the factual situation with a generalist approach.
  3. Candidates must understand how to infer the rules and understand the principles on which the passage is based.
  4. Candidates should have the ability to apply rules and principles to factually based paragraphs.
Quantitative Techniques
  1. Quantitative techniques consist of short sets of facts or propositions, graphs and textual, pictorial, diagrammatic representations of numerical information. Candidates will be presented with questions which are directly based on the information provided.
  2. Common topics also include ratios and proportions, introductory algebra, mensuration (the study of measurement) and statistical estimation.
  3. Candidates will be tested on the ability to derive essential information from graphs and implement them into the problem solving process.
  4. A solid understanding of basic but essential concepts (typically covered in 10th grade curriculum) is required to solve this section.
Current Affairs Including General Knowledge
As the name suggests, this section aims to assess candidates’ awareness of current affairs and how they perceive news events. To ace this section, the candidate must read newspapers and magazines daily to encompass the wide spectrum of topics on various subjects. Following are some of the many domains a student shall focus on:
  1. Significant events, dates and significance are happening on the domestic as well as the global front.
  2. Questions related to Arts and culture.
  3. Questions related to International affairs.
  4. Questions might be asked about some historical events that have a lasting significance.
Logical Reasoning
  1. In this section, a passage of about 300-350 words will be given. Questions will be based on the following points.
  2. Candidate should be able to understand the premises and conclusions of the given argument.
  3. They should have the skill to analyse and identify the hidden arguments in the passage.
  4. High-order thinking is required to analyse the paragraph critically.
  5. Candidates should develop a higher level of intelligence to understand the term inference, as inferential questions will be asked in this section.
  6. Skill to understand the passage based on logical premises is another point that needs to be considered while attempting legal reasoning questions.
  7. Additionally, candidates should be able to draw out an analogy and relationship between the passage's arguments.

It is important to note that the candidate can their test centre for CLAT 2026, but only during the correction window available before the admit card is released. To change your preferred test centre, follow the steps below:

Step 3: Go to 'Preferences' tab
Step 4: Update the 3 test centre preferences as required.

CLAT Admit Card
CLAT Admit Card 2026 has not been released by the Consortium of National Law Universities. Candidates will be able to download the admit card online through the official website of CLAT, i.e., consortiumofnlus.ac.in. whenever it will be made available. CLAT Admit Card Download Process
Once the Consortium of NLUs releases the CLAT 2026 admit card, a direct link will be available on its official website. At that time, candidates can follow the process detailed below to download the admit card:
  • Visit the official CLAT website – consortiumofnlus.ac.in
  • In the notification box, click on Admit Card.
  • You will be redirected to the login page, where you have to fill in your registration ID and password and then click on the "Download Admit Card" option.
  • Admit card will be displayed on the screen, which you can download right away and take a printout for the examination.
  • Take at least 2 copies of the CLAT admit card with you.

The National Law Universities, which are a total of 26 in India, have set their separate cut-off scores. There are 26 National Law Universities in India, each having its own set of qualifying marks. The institute calls candidates for selection if they meet the cut-off score.
