September 2026 is not too late to start preparing for the Integrated Program in Management Aptitude Test (IPMAT) 2027, rather the month that decides whether the next eight months stay calm or become a scramble. In the 2026 cycle, IIM Indore’s IPMAT was conducted on May 4, shortlisting 838 candidates from 17,916 who posted a positive score. The 2027 entrance exam is expected to be conducted in May, with registration likely opening in February. That window is long enough to build a serious attempt and short enough that a vague effort to prepare will not save you.
Therefore, if you are looking to appear for IPMAT 2027, this article is for you. Hitbullseye aims to help you evaluate your preparation strategy, and if it is not ideal, we will also help you understand how you can strategize better and prepare optimally to achieve your dream score. Treat this article as your evaluation, not your average pep talk dressed as a plan. Check where you stand. Then use the catch-up routes that match your gap through unfinished topics, thin daily hours, or mock scores that refuse to move.
What IPMAT 2027 Aspirants Should Know…
If you are preparing for entrance exams that offer undergraduate admission to the five-year Integrated Program in Management (IPM), whether it is IPMAT Indore, IPMAT Rohtak, or JIPMAT, you should treat these entrance exams as overlapping prep, not as one paper with various names. Wondering how? If you are still confused about the exam pattern and other special details, read below:
IPMAT Indore is expected to have 90 questions, 360 marks, 120 minutes, with a sectional time limit of 40 minutes. Quantitative Ability Short Answer has 15 questions at +4 and no negative marking. The Quantitative Ability MCQ section has 30 questions at +4/−1. Verbal Ability section has 45 questions at +4/−1. You cannot jump or switch between sections, as there is sectional timing. A weak section can end the attempt even if the total looks fine due to negative marking and other necessary details.
IPMAT Rohtak, on the other hand, is expected to have 120 questions, 480 marks, and 120 minutes. Quantitative Ability, Logical Reasoning, and Verbal Ability carry 40 questions each at a +4/−1 marking scheme. There is no sectional timing, making skipping through sections convenient and a skill of its own.
Lastly, the Joint Integrated Program in Management Aptitude Test, commonly known as JIPMAT is conducted for IIM Jammu and IIM Bodh Gaya. The entrance exam sits on a related syllabus and is worth keeping on the same calendar.
Now, the question for September is “Have I built the shared Quant and Verbal base that all three papers reward?” The 2026 Indore paper is the warning you should keep on your desk. Verbal remained demanding. Quantitative MCQ became the trap. The General MCQ cutoff fell to 27 out of 120 because the section was harder, not because the exam became easy. Arithmetic-only prep is no longer a safe story. Algebra, geometry, logs, and data interpretation inside Quant MCQ have to sit in the same plan as percentages and ratios.
The Much Needed Reality Check…
Use this test as a tracker to understand where your preparation stands today. Read, check, introspect, and engineer your strategy accordingly. By early September, a 2027 aspirant who started in June or July should have a working grip on the foundation layer of the following topics:
Quantitative Ability
- Number system: factors, HCF and LCM, remainders, unit digits, basics of divisibility
- Arithmetic: percentages, ratio and proportion, averages, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time-speed-distance, time and work, mixtures
- Algebra started: linear equations, quadratic equations, inequalities, identities
- Mental math: tables to 20, squares to 30, common fraction-to-percentage conversions
Verbal Ability
- A daily reading habit of 25 to 40 minutes (editorials or long-form non-fiction)
- Grammar: subject-verb agreement, modifiers, parallelism, tenses, articles
- Vocabulary underway through a structured book such as Word Power Made Easy, plus words collected from reading
- At least a few reading comprehension passages each week, not only grammar drills
Logical Reasoning (if IPMAT Rohtak or JIPMAT is a target)
- Arrangements, blood relations, directions, syllogisms, and one easy puzzle type
Wondering what you can still leave incomplete in September without panic? Full geometry and mensuration, coordinate geometry, functions, logarithms, permutations and combinations, probability, matrices, and heavy data interpretation sets. These topics belong to October through December. Non-maths students are not behind by definition. They are only behind if Class 6 to 10 arithmetic is still foggy. That layer can be learned in 60 to 90 focused days. Class 11 and 12 topics matter more for IPMAT Indore, IPMAT Rohtak or JIPMAT. Decide the target list now, then sequence the math topics accordingly.
The Daily Hour Checklist…
The table below helps you understand how much preparation time in September is ideal:

Quality beats a heroic timetable you abandon in 10 days. Two protected hours with a phone in another room outperform five distracted hours. If you are currently at 30 to 45 minutes, you are not finished. You are under-fuelled. The later section shows how to raise hours without burning out.
Your first-mock score bands for September…
Please note that the following bands are diagnostic ranges, not official IIM cutoffs and not a prediction of your May score. Mock difficulty varies by institute. Use one full-length Indore-pattern mock and, if you can, one Rohtak-pattern mock. Take them before you feel ready. Remember, the first mock is a map, not a ranking.

Do not compare a September mock with the 2026 final cutoffs and decide your own potential. Cutoffs move with paper difficulty. In 2026 the Quant MCQ floor looked low because the section was brutal. Verbal did not become optional. Your task right now is to establish a clean baseline and then maintain a weekly upward slope.
If topics are still unfinished, here’s what to do…
Students who stay behind are rarely the ones who started late. They are the ones who try to finish every chapter at coaching pace before they practice. IPMAT does not publish a sealed official syllabus. Previous papers reward a tight set of ideas used under a clock. Therefore, it is advisable to use that to your advantage. Follow the 6-week plan below to understand and prepare better:
- Weeks 1 and 2: Number system plus the entire arithmetic block. One concept video or chapter, then 25 to 40 questions the same day. Leave a topic only when you can solve the easy and medium questions without notes.
- Weeks 3 and 4: Algebra. Linear and quadratic equations, inequalities, and basic functions. These feed both SA and MCQ at Indore.
- Weeks 5 and 6: Geometry fundamentals (lines, triangles, circles, mensuration) plus daily verbal practice. Focus on permutations, probability, and logs until the first six weeks are complete.
Use the 70 per cent rule, which refers to that, if a chapter’s exercise has 40 questions, master the 28 questions that look like IPMAT. The last 12 contest-style puzzles can wait. Depth on the frequent ideas beats shallow coverage of every heading in a contents page. Further, pair every new Quant idea with a verbal brick.
Forty minutes of math, followed by one RC or one grammar drill, keeps both sections alive. Students who “finish Quant first” often walk into January with a 111-shaped hole in verbal. Remember to attempt the previous year's questions before spending money to buy extra books. Once arithmetic and basic algebra are completed, solve previous IPMAT Indore and Rohtak questions topic-wise as a 2025 or 2026 short answer set teaches more than a third reference book.
Please note, non-maths students should start from NCERT Class 6 to 10 for two weeks if fractions, percentages, and linear equations still feel foreign. Pride is a poor tutor. The exam does not award marks for having suffered through the wrong starting point.
If daily hours are a problem, raise them like this…
A sudden eight-hour timetable collapses by Thursday. Increase your study load the same way you would increase your running mileage. Here’s how:
- Week 1: Add 20 minutes to whatever you already do. If you study 40 minutes, make it 60. Put those 20 minutes on the weakest section, not on the chapter you enjoy.
- Week 2: Add another 20 to 30 minutes. Split the day if evenings are noisy. A 40-minute Quant block before school and a 50-minute Verbal block after homework is more reliable than one long night session.
- Week 3: Reach the target band for your situation. Class 12 should now be near two focused hours on weekdays. Droppers should now be near four hours of actual solving, not four hours of “being at the desk.”
Protect the hours with a visible rule. Same start time every day. Phone in another room. Open a notebook before the timer starts. It is already open before the timer starts. Motivation is a feeling. A start ritual is a system. Then, use the weekend as surplus, not as guilt repayment. Do not try to “make up” an unproductive week with a 12-hour Sunday. Do a four-hour block with a mock or two sectionals, then rest. Consistency across 10 weeks beats a single heroic day that you photograph for no one.
If mock scores are stuck, analyze like a coach…
A mock without analysis is not constructive progress. Students on IPMAT forums say this every year, and they are right. 20 unreviewed mocks lose to 10 reviewed ones. Take the first mock this week anyway. Sit for the full 120 minutes and use official sectional timing to understand your performance. Do not pause to disrupt the rhythm.
Then, build a one-page log for every test. Write these fields by hand or in a simple sheet:
- Date, mock name, and whether it was the IPMAT Indore or Rohtak pattern
- Raw score and sectional scores
- Attempts, correct, wrong, and unattempted in each section
- Time left in each section, or time dumped on one question
- Five questions you should have got right
- Three questions you should have left
- One process change for the next mock
Tag every error with these labels to help connect the dots….
- Concept: you did not know the idea
- Method: you knew the idea and chose a slow or clumsy path
- Calculation: the method was right, and the arithmetic failed
- Misread: you missed a word such as “except,” “minimum,” or "not"
- Time trap: the question was solvable and too expensive
Review on the same day or the next morning. Waiting a week turns the paper into a blur. Re-solve the five “should have got right” questions without looking at the solution. Then read the solution. If you still cannot teach that question to an empty chair, you have not mastered the concept yet.
Track a moving average, not a single spike. After four mocks, look at the middle two scores. That is your real level. One 180 after a 95 does not mean you have arrived. One 90 after a 150 does not mean you should quit. September mocks exist to expose leaks while there is time to patch them.
Raise scores in this order. First, stop negative marking in Verbal and Quant MCQ. Second, attempt every short answer question and collect the free accuracy. Third, add genuine new correct answers from weak topics. Many students try step three first and stay angry at a paper that punishes their sloppy attempts.
A practical September rhythm is one full mock every 10 to 14 days, plus one 40-minute sectional on two other days. From November, full mocks can shift to a weekly schedule. Analysis time should equal test time. If that sentence feels excessive, that is the habit that will later separate a call from a near miss.
To conclude, remember that stress is not proof of sincerity. Measure process, not identity. “I completed 30 mixed arithmetic questions and one RC” is a finished day. “I am not IIM material” is a story with no next action. Put the process on a wall calendar. Cross the day only if the block happened. Streaks are kinder than rankings. Keep one life outside the exam. A walk, a sport, a conversation that is not about cutoffs. The 2026 paper rewarded composure under a 40-minute lock. That composure is trained when your entire self-worth is not sitting inside one mock portal. Limit comparison. Other people’s September scores arrive without their coaching hours, their maths background, or the difficulty of their mock series. Use your own last paper as
You do not need to be ahead of every serious aspirant tonight. You need a truthful checklist, a topic order for the next six weeks, a slightly longer study block than last week, and a mock log that tells you what to fix. September is the month you choose that version of the year. Start the diagnostic today. Then do the next small piece of work that the page in front of you actually asks for.
All the best to those preparing to ace IPMAT 2027!
