Dear Future IPMer,

I am writing this letter to you from the other side of the first year. Not as someone who had it all figured out, but as someone who lived through the same mix of excitement, doubt, and discovery that you are about to experience. I know you are working hard to achieve the IIM of your dream, but remember, the year ahead will change you in quiet, steady, and meaningful ways. And that change is worth looking forward to!

Soon, you will walk into a campus that feels larger than anything you have known. There will be quizzes, case discussions, group projects, and a strong emphasis on class participation. At first, the pace will feel intense to you; those early weeks were a hard adjustment… the sleep cycle shifted, assignments came in like a never-ending pile, and the manifestation wall was reset to make space for new ones. Although quite overwhelming, this very intensity became my first silent teacher. I learned new things, almost without noticing, about how to prioritize, manage multiple demands, and keep moving even when the day feels full. Time management stops being a theory and becomes a lived skill. That alone was a powerful gift.

You may also feel, for a while, that everyone else belongs here more than you do. Batchmates will speak confidently about ideas you have not yet met. Concepts from economics, psychology or organizational behavior will sound alien. This sense of being “average” among high achievers is common, but the good news… it is temporary!

The new friends you make will help you move past it. Case-based discussions and class participation require you to speak, ask questions, and offer views even when they are incomplete. You discover that communication is less about perfect language and more about presence and the willingness to share what you already have. By the end of the year, you will notice that you no longer shrink from unfamiliar words or polished speakers. You simply show up and participate fearlessly!

Coming to the curriculum, it supports a broader transformation. Alongside mathematics, statistics, and economics, you encounter psychology, sociology, literature, languages, and even performing arts. These subjects are not extras; they are part of the foundation. They invite you to connect ideas across disciplines and to see problems from more than one angle. Eventually, you will end up discovering interests you had not fully explored before. You start treating challenges as information rather than verdicts. Humility and ambition sit side by side: surrounded by capable peers, you realize excellence is common, and that realization becomes inspiring rather than diminishing.

Hostel life adds another layer of growth. For the first time you manage daily routines, share spaces, and navigate independence without the constant presence of family. It can feel unfamiliar at the beginning, yet it also creates room for deep friendships. Late-night conversations, shared deadlines, small celebrations, and mutual support turn strangers into a chosen circle. You learn from people who come from different streams, states, and ways of thinking. Their perspectives help stretch yours. Group work teaches negotiation and collaboration. Student committees and clubs give you chances to organize, lead, and experiment. These experiences quietly build a more adaptable and socially confident version of you.

None of this means the year is effortless! There will be weary evenings and moments of self-doubt. But remember that it will leave you more independent, articulate, resilient, and clearer about your own direction. Now, I would like to end this letter with a little piece of advice: embrace the discomfort as an invitation rather than a threat; speak even when your answer is incomplete, and ask for help without apology. Remember to explore clubs, conversations, and courses that feel new. Remember that progress compounds quietly. You do not need to become someone else; you just need to keep showing up as the person you already are, while allowing the environment to stretch you.

The first year of IPM is not a test of whether you already have everything figured out. It is a carefully designed space that helps you become someone who can figure things out. It rewards curiosity, consistency, and the courage to participate. It turns the early “Can I do this?” into a quiet “I am doing this.”

You are ready for this! The year ahead will ask a lot of you, and it will give back even more. Trust the process. The stronger, clearer, and more capable version of you is already waiting on the other side.
