Keeping the interdisciplinary studies as one of the guiding principles, various IIT’s have, incorporated bachelorette courses for humanities and the 5 Year integrated Master of Arts (M.A.) programme in their course curriculum.

HSEE in particular stands for Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination which is conducted by IIT Madras specifically for admission into its 5 year graduation courses for humanities.

The course offers two major specializations - Developmental Studies and English.

Eligibility Criteria:

A Candidate should have appeared any one of the following qualifying examinations for the first time in either 2021 or 2022

  • The final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by a Central or State Board recognized by the Association of Indian Universities
  • Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examination conducted by a Board or University recognized by the Association of Indian Universities
  • Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defense Academy
  • Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of five subjects.
  • Any Public School, Board or University examination in India or in a foreign country recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities
  • H.S.C. vocational examination
  • Class XII skill courses of CBSE
  • General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London, Cambridge or Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level.
  • High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.
  • Candidates who have completed Class XII (or equivalent) examination outside India or from a Board not specified above should produce a certificate from the Association of Indian Universities to the effect that the examination they have passed is equivalent to the Class XII examination.

    In case the Class XII examination is not a public examination, the candidate must have passed at least one public (Board or Pre-University) examination earlier.

    Date of Birth

    Candidates whose date of birth falls on or after October 01, 1997 are eligible for HSEE-2022. However, in the case of SC, ST and PwD candidates, upper age limit is relaxed by 5 years, i.e., candidates belonging to SC, ST, and PwD and born on or after October 01, 1992 are eligible. The date of birth as recorded in the High School (10th std./12th Std.) first Board/ Pre-University Certificate will be taken as authentic. Candidates must produce a scanned copy of this certificate along with the completed Application Form as proof of their age and at the time of admission original certificate has to be produced failing which they will be disqualified.

Time Duration

The total time duration of HSEE entrance is 3 hours

Objective Types

Part 1 is an objective type multiple choice questions and it is administered in an online mode. It has to be completed in 2 ½ hours duration.

Written Ability Test

Part 2 is a written ability test where the student has to write an essay in time duration of 30 minutes

Negative Marking

There is no negative marking in the exam.

    Correct usage of tenses, verb patterns, articles is important as question types include Sentence correction, rearrangement, completion etcetera.

  • Vocabulary

    Knowledge of synonyms, antonyms, direct meaning is validated via this section.

  • Analytical and Quantitative ability

    Questions test candidates on basic math, data interpretation and logical reasoning

  • Indian Economy

    Scope of syllabus for this section is close to microeconomics and macroeconomics for Higher Secondary School.

  • Indian Society and Culture

    Knowledge of society structure, public policy, sociology, Indian philosophy, medieval and modern history is requisite to ace this section.

  • World Affairs

    Questions in this section usually vary from recent affairs and up to major challenges faced by the world in the last 3 centuries

  • Environment and Ecology

    Knowledge of ecosystems and global environment scenario, challenges posed by pollution and renewable sources of energy is validated.

  • Essay Writing

    Candidates' ability to present logical arguments or demonstrate clear perspective via use of reasonable examples is crucial for this section of exam.
