University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) at Panjab University
Panjab University was founded in 1882 with expansion in the legal education with the establishment of the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) as a constituent department in the academic session 2004-05. The main campus of Panjab University is situated in Sector 14, Chandigarh with branches extended in Sri Muktsar Sahib, Ludhiana, Hoshiarpur and Kauni. Over the past two decades, UILS has rapidly evolved, marking milestones by producing graduates in judiciary, corporate law, litigation, academia and public service.
As mentioned before the UILS is responsible for hosting two UG programs, namely B.A. LL.B. Hons. and B.Com. LL.B. Hons. However, it is important to note that PU also offers a Bachelor of Law (LL.B) (3 Year Course) which states under the Post Graduate Law Department as the course mandates a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized university. B.A. LL.B. Hons. at UILS, Panjab University (5 Year Course)
Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Legislative Law (B.A. LL.B. Hons.) is an integrated 5 Year Course devised to comprehensively combine the two degrees. The program has evolved over the years in order to cater to advanced needs, blending legal and interdisciplinary challenges through rigorous, relevant and practical training.
The curriculum includes education on subjects like political science, sociology, history, and economics alongside core legal courses such as constitutional law, criminal law and contract law. substantive laws, procedural techniques, client counseling and research along with extracurricular activities like moot court competitions, client counseling sessions, quizzes, seminars, group discussions, and extension lectures. B.Com. LL.B. Hons. at UILS, Panjab University (5 Year Course)
Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Legislative Law (B.A. LL.B. Hons.) is an integrated 5 Year Course devised to comprehensively combine the two degrees. Similar to the above program, B.Com. LL.B has evolved over the years in order to cater to advanced needs, blending legal and interdisciplinary challenges through rigorous, relevant and practical training.
This program focuses on commerce-related subjects such as accountancy, business management, corporate finance and taxation, integrated with the same core legal curriculum including commercial law, corporate governance and/or business-related legal practice. Extracurricular activities include moot court competitions, client counseling sessions, quizzes, seminars, group discussions, extension lectures and internships. Eligibility Criteria for admission in B.A LL.B or B.Com. LL.B at UILS
In order to get admission in B.A LL.B and B.Com. LL.B, the candidate must have passed Class XII examination with at least 50% marks (45% marks in case of SC/ST/BC/PwD) from any recognized Board. Additionally, applicants who have obtained Class XII Higher Secondary Pass Certificate or First Degree Certificate after pursuing Studies through distance, correspondence or open universities are also eligible.
In addition to this, the candidate must qualify PU UILS Entrance Exam for admission into all three programs. However, it is important to note that the dates for the 5-year integrated B.A LL.B and B.Com. LL.B are different from LL.B. After qualifying this exam, the admission to the said course/s shall be on the basis of Final Merit List.
PU UILS Entrance Exam Details
PU UILS Entrance Exam is designed to test the candidate’s general knowledge, language skills and problem solving abilities under time constraint. The official date for the exam has been released, for the academic year 2026-2027. The entrance exam for PU-B.A./B.Com. LL.B. (Hons.) PU UILS Exam Pattern and Syllabus
The PU UILS Entrance Exam is a 90 minute long pen and paper based exam that tests candidate’s General Knowledge, Legal Aptitude, Mental Ability and Language proficiency. Each correct answer will result in a reward of 1 mark. Conversely, each wrong answer will result in a deduction of 0.25 marks. There are a total of 100 Multiple Choice (MCQ) based questions divided into the following sections:

PU UILS Admission Process and Timeline
The candidate must follow the following steps in order to gain admission in either B.A LL.B (Hons.) or B.Com. LL.B (Hons.):
- The candidate is required to fill the PU UILS Entrance Exam Form, on http://uglaw.puchd.ac.in and appear for the exam as directed through the official website.
- Once the candidate passes the exam and is eligible to apply for the program, they must fill the admission form, usually available at uglaw.puchd.ac.in.
- In the admission form itself, it is mandatory for every candidate to indicate the reserved category/ies for which they want to apply. This step is critically important for those in reserved category as once the form has been submitted any additions and/or change shall not be allowed, resulting in the candidate to be presumed of general category.
- After completing the process, a merit list will be released and the counselling rounds will begin.
